Special events are attractive revenue earners for non-profits because the proceeds can be used for general operating needs. General operating funds are increasingly difficult to fund by major gifts, foundation grants or corporate support.

Here's a little-known secret outside of the non-profit sector. The public frequently assumes that people being "honored" at galas or special events have some long-time affiliation with an organization or a special connection with the issue or subject area the non-profit is involved with. This is not always the case.

The non-profit will select an honoree not only because of their civic interests, but also based upon their ability to raise money at the event through ticket sales, purchases of journal ads and/or tables. But typically, the executive being honored does not give enough good leads to the non-profit to meet goal. That's when your organization needs to augment its lists.
